US History Course Description
The study of United States History in high school builds on historical and geographical perspectives gained from the elementary and middle level study of North Carolina and the United States. The study of World History in grade nine will now enable students to place the United States in a world context as well. The economic and political perspectives and historical foundations gained from the study of Civics and Economics will prepare students for the examination of our nation’s history. In order to include the perspectives of the twenty-first century, the study of United States History will begin with the Federalist Period and continue through the changes in America following the terrorist attack on September 11th. In North Carolina, the study of history no longer supports memorization of unexamined and isolated facts but emphasizes the thinking skills to detect trends, analyze movements and events, and develop a "sense of history".
Attendance and Make-up Work
Activities will be intensive during class time and students are responsible for all material presented in class. Evaluation includes some material presented only in class, thus attendance affects performance on tests. This class will comply strictly with the OHS Attendance Policy as stated in the Student Handbook. After an absence, students have the responsibility of requesting and completing make-up work. Make-up work will not be discussed during instructional time. Students are welcome to come by to see me before school or after school as instructional time does not allow ample time for individual student conferences.
Evaluation and Grading Procedures
Quarter grades are divided into two categories: daily grades that may include (but not limited to) class activities, quizzes, and homework; and test grades. Test grades will include objective and subjective tests and projects. Due dates will be announced generously in advance, and students are strongly encouraged to use their planners in which to enter all deadlines and assignments.
Grade Notification
Interim Reports will be sent home to the families of ALL students approximately every three weeks. Interim Reports are to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to me within a week of issue. Parents, it is of extreme importance that you can contact me frequently to check on your child’s progress. Please do not wait until the end of the quarter to be concerned. Email is the quickest and most reliable avenue for communication.
Academic Integrity
Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO BE COMPLETED INDIVIDUALLY UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED BY THE TEACHER.
